Waiting For A Home

20 Mar 2015 by Kaysey Pietrzykowsky, No Comments »

At Middletown Humane Society in New York’s Hudson Valley Mira the pit bull is waiting to be adopted into a forever home. Mira came to the shelter as a stray in May 2011 when she as 4 years old. Now she is 8 years old, but still enthusiastic. Mira is the shelter’s longest resident.Although she has been waiting for 4 years, Mira hasn’t given up. She isn’t depressed as most people would think.

Britney Schoonmaker, a worker who does numerous jobs at the shelter, thinks there are reasons why Mira hasn’t been adopted yet. Many people believed in false stereotypes about pit bulls when Mira first came to the shelter. Mira is an older dog now, too. Older dogs require more care. Adding to the list, Mira isn’t great with other animals.

To get people interested, Schoonmaker has advertised Mira on the MHS website and in the local paper. Her adoption fee has been lifted. When visitors come Mira is let out of her kennel, into the office, so people can see her in action. Schoonmaker wants to take her to adoption events, but the other animals would bother Mira.

Schoonmaker has planned that, if needed Mira could live the rest of her life at MHS. Although, Schoonmaker thinks she would be much happier with a family of her own.
