Toy Sorting Party for ET4J

On Saturday, October 4th, from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m., Emily’s family, volunteers from the Yearbook class at Hillcrest (a.k.a. the Toy Team), and others came to help out at Paseo Highlands Park. The event was held to sort all of the toys received for Emily’s Toys for Joy (ET4J).

When first arriving at Paseo Highlands Park, volunteers were asked to sign in, and then received a shirt showing that they were a volunteer for the event. Volunteers arriving early (kids, students, and even some parents) started to make letters for the kids in the hospital. They also had the choice of writing short notes on a strip of paper, which were all stapled together in a circle to form a very long chain. In the end, there were some very thoughtful and sweet letters and notes for the children.

Below are some photographs of Hillcrest students crafting notes for the children:

To start the event off, Emily gave a small speech on how proud she was on the outcome of this year’s toys collected.  She wanted to thank those who showed up to help organize.

After the speech, we all separated into groups and worked at tables which were set up to organize all of the toys (infants, 3-5 yr olds, 6-7 yr olds, teenagers, etc.).

Volunteers were asked to either:

  1. Pull toys out of the boxes and define which table they belonged
  2. Or, gather in small groups of 3-4 people at each table in order to strategically pull toys from their designated tables  and into boxes for delivery of toys to varying hospitals throughout the valley.

The process did take some time, but it was fun when working with your peers in order to get the job done.

An hour into the whole process, we received fantastic news!  Walmart, one of the best contributors to ET4J, donated $1,200 for us to spend on the purchasing of new toys for the children in the hospital. Once everyone had received the amazing news, the Yearbook students from Hillcrest split up into two groups and headed off to Walmart with Mrs Parrino and another volunteer from Emily’s family. As everyone arrived to the Walmart, we all started to run into the aisles to find the best toys for the best deals. It was a blast shopping for toys for the kids in the hospital knowing that we would be making their day when they received the toys.

Below is a photo of the Toy Team at Walmart along with the toys that were purchased:

When we returned back from Walmart, everyone was treated with scrumptious food catered from Olive Garden.

The whole day was a ton of fun and went very well!  The best part was knowing that we could brighten up an otherwise dismal day for a child recovering in a hospital.
