On March 3, 2015, President Barack Obama announced his plan to help girls around the world go and stay in school. The program is called ‘Let Girls Learn”. 60 million girls around the world are denied schooling. President Obama said that the U.S. supports the problem quietly, but wants to now become a stronger advocate.

The Peace Corps will begin the “Let Girls Learn” program in Albania, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Georgia, Ghana, Moldova, Mongolia, Mozambique, Togo and Uganda. The First Lady will also travel to Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan and  Cambodia later this month.  She will visit Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s wife, Akie, who is also an advocate for girls’ education. In Cambodia, she will visit Peace Corps volunteers and a school that is “community-driven solutions are changing girls’ lives.”

Mr. Obama wants other countries to take the initiative to help girls get an education. He said, “We’re making it clear to any country that’s our partner or wants to be our partner that they need to get serious about increasing the number of girls in school.”.

This plan will also educate girls in the United States. Students will learn about the sacrifices that some girls make just to learn. Mrs. Obama said, “I want our young people to be awed by these girls, but more importantly I want them to be inspired and motivated by these girls.”

Thank you for the inspiring article, Kaysey! Our First Lady is reminding me more and more of another amazing First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, who brought attention to the ignored and impoverished people of her day. I hope, like Mrs. Roosevelt, Mrs. Obama will continue to lead causes long after her husband leaves office. She is the epitome of service leadership.
