Sony Teams Up with Marvel

On February 9th, big news was released to the general public: Marvel is joining forces with Sony to make more Spiderman movies. Previously, the Spiderman franchise rights belonged to Sony alone. Due to this, there was never a possibility of crossovers with the Avengers or any other Marvel property. However, with this unique character-sharing arrangement struck by Sony and Disney, Spiderman can join the established Marvel Cinematic Universe. It has also been announced that Spiderman will appear in a stand-alone film produced by both Marvel and Sony in 2017. He will also appear alongside the Avengers in the third installment of the Avengers franchise.

That’s right, there’s going to be yet another Spiderman movie. Some people think this is odd, as there have been 5 stand-alone Spiderman films and two different actors playing Spidey in the last 13 years. However, Spiderman is the world’s most profitable superhero. In fact, last year, Marvel sold $1.3 billion worth of Spiderman products and only $325 million worth of Avengers products. By rebooting the series yet again under both a Marvel and Sony banner, there is the possibility for even more profit.

But there’s more to this story. The studios have announced that Andrew Garfield will not be returning to play the web-slinger. This has caused much anger and excitement across the internet, along with many predictions about what actor will replace Garfield. Some rumored contenders are Taron Egerton, Dylan O’Brien, Zac Efron, Nick Robinson, Logan Lerman and Ansel Elgort, but no one knows for sure who the new Spiderman will be. One thing that is certain is that this is going to be quite the ride.
