Back in March of 2014, Doniece Sandoval, a former marketing executive, started Lava Mae. Lava Mae is a bus with showers in it. The bus will allow the 7,350  homeless people living in San Francisco to have access to showers.

Sandoval always wanted to lend a hand to the homeless of San Francisco, but didn’t know how. One day, she passed by a women crying and saying she would never be clean again. Her neighbor was on the streets after he was evicted from her neighborhood. In San Francisco, there are only 8 shower facilities with 1-2 stalls.

In Spanish “lavame” means “wash me” and in the South, where Sandoval is from it is not uncommon for people to have two first names. This led to the creation of the name, Lava Mae. The reason they are mobile is because it is easier to reach the homeless. Also, real estate prices in San Francisco are high.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency donated the first Lava Mae bus. The Public Utilities Commission is letting the buses use the city fire hydrants, too. Bevan Dufty, the director of Housing Opportunity, Partnerships & Engagement under the mayor of San Francisco, is a big supporter of Lava Mae.

This year Lava Mae expects to give 2000 showers a week!
