Chemical weapons

The threat of chemical weapon use in Syria dates back to over a year ago. In August 2012, President Obama gave a speech warning of the use of chemical weapons. Later that year in December, Obama repeated his warning. He said of chemical weapons are used, Assad, the president of Syria, will be held accountable and there will be repercussions.

On March 19, 2013, Syria claimed the rebels (people fighting to over throw the Syrian government) had used chemical weapons against government forces in a fight just outside of the city of Aleppo, Syria. The next month Britain and France claimed they’re in possession of evidence of chemical weapons. Five days later, an Israeli official adds to Britain and France’s claim. The official said he’s convinced chemical weapons have in fact been used in Syria. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not back up the official’s statement. But, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State did. They confirmed evidence of chemical weapons does exists. The Turkish Prime Minister backed the statement up, too saying it’s “clear that the Assad regime” is using chemical weapons.

In June, France said sarin gas was used against civilians in attacks by the Syrian government. The Obama administration later confirmed France’s statement against Syria. In five days, the Group of 8 would respond by saying, “condemn in the strongest terms any use of chemical weapon and all human rights violations in Syria.”

Russia disagreed with France’s findings. They stated the findings were just “homemade rockets.”

Videos then surfaced of hundreds of people, of all ages, suffering. Their symptoms showed signs of mass poisoning. After the videos were seen, Israel agreed with France; chemical weapons have been used in Syria.

Obama stated that the situation in Syria is “going to require American attention.” Since then, five United States Navy destroyers have been stationed in the Mediterranean Sea.

People have very strong opinions about taking military action in Syria, like Ian Matchner. He says, “We don’t need to get involved, because we’ve already had two world wars, we don’t need another one.”

Others like, Lorene Ellis, disagree with Ian. She states, “As a dominate world leader, we need to do the right thing with chemical weaponry.”

The chemical weapon use in Syria goes against the 1928 Group Agreement, also known as the red-line. The Group Agreement is an international rule banning the use of chemical weapons. The agreement was brought to life after the horrors of mustard gas in World War One.

The Group Agreement gets world powers thinking about whether or not Syria should have repercussions. But regular, everyday people think about this, too. So, the question is, should Obama sends military troops to Syria? Will Obama send our fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, and friends to battle? Or, should America stay out of a Syrian war? What do you think?

Tell an adult no matter what!

16 year old Hannah Anderson was kidnapped by her uncle Jim. She is now using social media to help her cope.  Famous site Ask.fm was the place where people have been asking her about the kidnapping.

Q) Why don’t you tell your parents he creeped you out?

Hannah) In part he was my dad’s friend and I don’t want to ruin anything between them.

So as you can see even if it is minor you need to tell an adult right away. It could mean the difference between life and death.

Luxury Recliners at AMC Arrowhead Theatre

Have you ever dreamed about watching an HD, big-screen, 3D movie at the movie theatre in an upscale, deluxe reclining leather chair? Well the time has come! To experience these fantastic and luxurious leather recliners, you must go to AMC Theaters at the Arrowhead Mall. Not only do these theaters have the lavish and posh recliners, they also offer over 100 different flavored drinks to quench your thirst. This great deal also includes full menu meals and a bunch of various snack choices.

According to my 9 year old sister, Lexi, who went to this theatre a few weeks ago when asked to describe her experience, she said, “I was like Oh My Gosh! This is so cool! These chairs are awesome! These chairs are so great!” So I decided I needed to give this theatre a try and experience these extravagant chairs myself last night for the first time with my friend Rebeca Gandolfi, who is also a 7th grader attending Hillcrest.

When we first walked into the theatre it smelled just like leather inside a brand new car. I was blown away. The chairs were so comfortable and relaxing. When I sat in the chair for the first time, pressed the button to recline, I was in total disbelief watching my feet lift off the floor. This did not feel like a theatre, this felt like my home but better. I wish I had a chair at home that all I had to do was push a button for the chair to recline. I asked my friend Rebecca about her experience and she said, “The theatre was amazing! The seats were really comfy. The theatre itself was fun and looked totally techno.” Also, we ordered from the full meal menu and the pizza and fries were scrumptious.

All in all, it was a great theatre experience. And the best part is not only did every room at this theatre have the reclining chairs, the ticket prices are the same as any other AMC theatre:

Prior to 12 noon – $6.00 for adults and children ages 12 & under
12 noon – 4pm – $7.25 for adults and $6.00 for children 12 and under
After 4pm – $10.00 for adults and $7.25 for children 12 and under

This is the perfect opportunity to hang out with family, relatives, and friends to enjoy a stellar movie in these state-of-the-art reclining chairs.

Jorge Vargas car wash

So many tragedies occur every year in our community, but nothing is worse than when someone who serves in the community has their life cut short. On Thursday, August 8th, 2013 at 4:00 A.M., 27 year old, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) detention officer, Jorge Vargas, was shot and killed on his driveway near 91st Avenue and lower Buckeye Road. It’s thought that he was about to head to work when an unidentified, Latino male jumped out of the shadow and took the shot.

Several, concerned citizens held a car wash in the hot sun on Sunday, August 18th, 2013 at Jimbo’s Restaurant located at 12224 N. 51st Ave. Glendale, AZ to help support the detention officer’s family in their time of hurt. “It’s so wonderful that so many people took time out of their day to do this,” said Hillcrest’s very own Ms. McCarthy. “It’s always so sad to lose someone in the service,” she said. I talked to Anthony DiGiorgio about the situation and asked him how he felt about the killing he said, “It stinks to be serving the community and still not know if you’re safe when you step out onto your front lawn.” This situation is even being funded by Wells Fargo. This fund is called “The Officer Vargas Memorial Fund.”
