Movie Pit: Muppets Most Wanted

Welcome to the Movie Pit. Movie Pit is a weekly movie review on TDN. All ratings for Movie Pit are based on the website Rotten Tomatoes, the free movie review website which judges if something is a ripe tomato (above 60%) or a rotten tomato (under 60%).

The following paragraph is an excerpt from the Rotten Tomatoes website:

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine-the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog-and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.(c) Disney

32% is an awful score for a sequel to The Muppets. That’s why the critics gave it a 77% instead. However, comments from many critics would lead you to believe that this movie could possibly be as low as 32%. A lot of critics did not like the fact that the movie was just not as appealing to the audience and was a little bland. “Kids will enjoy it, and there are more than enough clever gags to keep parents amused. But the film lacks the tenderness and rich nostalgia that made The Muppets such an improbable delight,” was said by, you guessed it, Christopher Orr in his review on The Atlantic. Entertainment Weekly’s critic, Chris Nashawaty, had this to say about the movie: “The songs are infectious, but the rest (despite turns by Tina Fey and Ty Burrell) lacks some of the gang’s usual feel-good joy.”

There were still a good amount of critics who liked the movie as well. Betty Jo Tucker on ReelTalk Movie Reviews said, “This latest Muppet movie comes across as one of the best. Happily, that special Muppet magic is still going strong!” “While it’s different from the Muppet movies I saw as a child, this film has the same charm and irreverence I’ve come to expect from these fuzzy little guys,” was said by Kevin Carr in 7M Pictures. John Esther from UR Chicago Magazine said, “While I have not seen all of the Muppet movies, I have seen most of them, and this one is probably my favorite…”

But of course there are always those guys and gals that have something completely negative to say about something and that person definitely was Colin Covert on Minneapolis Star Tribune. He said, “The new Muppet movie is as sweet as a bowl of tapioca. And about as interesting.”

This movie is one of the top movies on my list of movies I want to see. I would encourage anyone who hasn’t, to go, and see it as well.
