Movie Pit: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

This movie was a lot different than any other movie that I’ve ever seen, which slightly restores my faith in Hollywood. I loved the idea of this movie and I thought it was casted without flaw.

Steve Carell teams up with Jennifer Garner, Dylan Minnette, Kerris Dorsey, and Elise Vargas/Zoey to be the family of terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day expert, Alexander Cooper played by Ed Oxenbould. This cast was so dynamic and perfect. The only person I may have chosen differently is the part of Anthony Cooper played by Dylan Minnette. Minnette seemed very uncomfortable and awkward being the brother of Alexander Cooper. He didn’t seem to enjoy being Anthony Cooper but was still willing to do it.

As far as the story line goes, I loved the idea of the movie. The idea was so simple and not what you would expect to be a major motion picture and that’s what made it original. I haven’t seen a new, original movie since Nonstop came out, which I absolutely loved! Now I’m refreshed after going through an original movie dry spell.

Alexander has been going through bad day after bad day until at 12:01 a.m. on his birthday, when he made himself a birthday sundae with a candle and wished that his whole family would have as bad of a day as his days are. One thing after another occurs like an endless row of dominoes that makes up the worst possible day for the Coopers…except for Alexander who has had the best day of his life. In the end, the whole family realizes that as long as they are with each other, they keep a positive attitude and they don’t give up, they can still make the day pretty good after all.

I love the morals of this story as well. They give off the perfect lesson for people ages 1-1 million years old:

1) No one can do anything alone.

2) If you make the best of a situation you have a higher chance of it not getting the best of you.

3) There’s no point in giving up.

Hats off to the director, Jorge R. Gutierrez, for an excellent movie and I give him and his whole crew  4/5 starts on this movie.
