Maltese Falcons Go To JA Finance Park

On December 8th and 9th the Maltese Falcons visited Junior Achievement Finance Park to learn about budgeting.

Some of you may have been or heard of Biztown. Finance Park is the middle school version of Biztown. Finance Park focuses more on budgeting.

When the group first arrived, we were given an overview of what the day was  going to consist of. The day was going to be split into three parts.

After getting directions for the first part of the day, we headed toward the business we were assigned to. We then looked through our folders and read our Life Situation Profiles. Our Life Situation Profiles told us what our jobs were, if we were married, how much money we earned, etc. We recorded some of this information on a sheet of paper and figured out how much we made in a year with our taxes included and how much we made in month with our taxes included. We had to figure out a maximum and minimum for our spending. Lastly, we recorded the morning stock prices.

Next, we went around to all the different businesses and gathered the papers we were going to need to figure out our monthly budget. Some papers were made for everyone, while others were made especially for you. Once we collected all our papers, we got to work on our budget. We had to buy a house and a car and figure out a budget for our necessities. At the end of this part of the day, we recorded the mid-day stock prices.

After lunch, we finished up our budgeting. We then went around to all the businesses again and paid our bills and bought our house and car. At the end of the trip, we checked with the Finance Park staff to make sure we paid our bills correctly and recorded end of the day stock prices.

I feel I learned a lot from this trip and had tons of fun! The trip gave me an idea about what it’s like in the real world. I really hope the Maltese Falcons do this for next year’s team members!
