Kid Appreciation in Into the Woods

Into the Woods was the undeniably biggest movie musical of 2014. It had an all star, top notch cast and excellent crew (including the legendary Stephen Sondheim). It was also a pretty darn good movie. However, after seeing it for a second time with some theatre friends, there was something that really bugged me. Like, seriously irritated me and rubbed me in the wrong way.

No, it wasn’t Johnny Depp’s incredibly creepy portrayal of the wolf or the whole Prince/Baker’s wife thing. It was that the kids in the cast didn’t get enough respect or credit for what they did. Specifically in the credits.

In the film’s closing credits, the two child actors in the movie weren’t acknowledged until after many other adults who had supporting roles, despite the fact that the kids were leads.

The child characters, Jack and Little Red Riding Hood, are played by Daniel Huttlestone and Lilla Crawford respectively, both phenomenal young performers. Daniel is 15 and has performed at Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the Queen’s Theatre as well as playing Gavroche in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables. Lilla Crawford is 13 and has been in two Broadway musicals as Debbie in Billy Elliot and the leading role of Annie in Annie. Though they haven’t done as much so far in their careers as the other, older actors in Into the Woods, they both had leading roles and deserved to be treated as such.

In the actual Broadway show’s curtain call, the order goes: The Witch, The Baker, The Baker’s Wife, Cinderella, then Jack and Red. However, the movie’s credits, the first four actors are credited in that order, but are followed by Cinderella’s Prince, Jack’s Mom, Rapunzel, Cinderella’s Stepmother, Lucinda, Florinda, and the Wolf. All of these roles were definitely smaller than Jack and Red, yet they were placed first. Why? Because they were all adult actors with more experience and acting credits.

What are your thoughts on this situation?
