On November 8th, the devastating Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines. The 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines were left flooded by one of the strongest storms to ever touch down on land. The typhoon left numerous villages destroyed in its wake. This storm with 195 mile per hour winds victimized  4.3 million people, leaving over 2,500 others dead.

The International Medical Corps are currently stationed in the islands. They along with the American Red Cross were awarded $.5M each from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians to help those affected by the storm.

“The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’ compassionate and extremely generous support will be critical to providing lifesaving health care for families affected by the catastrophic typhoon,” said the President & CEO of International Medical Corps, Nancy A. Aossey. “As communities struggle to cope with this devastating storm, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’ timely gift will allow our First Responders to provide critical medical care, relieve suffering and restore hope when it’s most needed.”

No matter what amount, money is an enormous help to the people affected by this disastrous storm. That’s why every middle school in the DVUSD district will start Island Aid. Island Aid is your chance to help the people of the Philippines. Students will be at lunch this week starting Monday the 18th. They will be collecting money donations during your lunch period. Your donation will be greatly appreciated.
