Beauty and the Beast Remake

At this point, it’s old(ish) news that Disney is making a live action version of its 1991 animated hit Beauty and the Beast in 2016. After the success of other live action remakes of animated classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Oz the Great and Powerful, Maleficent, and Cinderella, it was expected that Beauty and the Beast would be remade sooner or later. After the original film’s monumental success, this live action remake is a big step. The 1991 version of Beauty and the Beast was nominated for five Oscars (including Best Picture) and won two. Now, Disney is hoping to revamp this success.

According to rumors, this remake will be more true to the original film than Maleficent and Cinderella were. It has been confirmed that this will be a musical and will possibly contain songs not in the original movie but rather from the Broadway production such as Home, If I Can’t Love Her, and Me, which I am personally thrilled about.

So far, three cast members have been confirmed for the movie. Starring as Belle will be one of the world’s favorite child actors turned celebrities and feminist icons, Emma Watson. She announced her role through Facebook, saying “I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it. Emma xx”.  Opposite of her playing the Beast will be Downton Abbey and Broadway star Dan Stevens. Emma congratulated him through Twitter and said “Could not be more happy that this man will be Beast!!! Welcome aboard @thatdanstevens #beautyandthebeast” Dan also posted a picture that read “Beast Mode”. Emma also gave Luke Evans, who will be playing Gaston, a very warm welcome via Twitter. “Bonjour Gaston! Welcome! #beautyandthebeast”. Evans responded to the tweet, saying “Why thank you Belle!!” In other news, it’s  been rumored (but not confirmed) that Emma Thompson will be playing Mrs. Potts, Timothy Spall will be playing Maurice, and Matt Lucas will be playing Lefou.

Though much is still unknown about the film, Beauty and the Beast is bound to be a huge blockbuster once it’s released in 2016.

Excellent article, Lauren. I especially appreciated your inclusion of Miss Watson’s unabashed excitement. That, along with my curiosity about her singing abilities, will get me to the theater on opening day. Now, if you could only report that a live action, “The Little Mermaid” is on deck, I would have all my Disney wishes come true!
