A Cancer Patient’s Magical Photoshoot

Five-year-old Isabella Harvey of Staten Island, New York needed a confidence boost. She had been fighting leukemia in January of 2013 and relapsed this September, needing aggressive chemotherapy. After her hair began falling out, Isabella became extremely self-conscious in her appearance.

“She was embarrassed,” says Isabella’s mother, Pina. “When her hair fell out the first time she was three so she really didn’t understand. But now she is five and was having a hard time dealing with it.”

In order to help her daughter feel better about how she looked, Pina contacted Gianna Nicole’s Heart of Hope, an organization that assists families whose children are battling cancer. The charity joined up with Bella Princess LLC, a princess party company to set up a photo shoot late in November for Isabella, which included a guest appearance by Cinderella. The model that dressed as the Disney princess wore a bald cap, showing the cancer patient there was no reason for her to be insecure.

At first, Isabella was insecure and wore a hat to the shoot. Then, when Cinderella walked in, confident despite her lack of hair, Isabella exclaimed, “She looks just like me!”

“After all she went through … it was such an amazing feeling seeing her so happy,” says Pina. “It re-enforces what I tell her every day- that she is beautiful. That photo shoot just made her realize everyone feels the same way as [I do].”
