By now, you may have seen thousands of people dump ice water on their heads for the ALS Association, other known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, or have done it yourself. Many well known athletes and celebrities have taken a part well, icluding Justin Timberlake, sports teams like The Jets, The Giants, and even Bill Gates! This global sensation is sweeping across the world, but do you know how it began?

Although, the Cold Water Challenge had been around for a few years where you jump into cold water for cancer, Pete Frates was the inspiration for the start of this challenge for ALS. Former BC Baseball player, Frates was diagnosed with ALS 2 years ago and is now paralyzed, is not able to talk, and needs a feed tube to eat, but his mind might even be sharper than ours.

“”Inside I’m as sharp as ever — if not sharper than I’ve ever been,” Frates said in a video posted to his website. “Because when you sit and can’t really move, when you’re observing all day … you notice every little thing. My memory has gotten better. I just notice things I didn’t notice before.”

Frates has already fulfilled one part of his new dream, getting the world to talk about ALS and empty their pockets for organizations that are researching a cure. The next part, though, he can only hope will come as soon as possible.

“My dream is for this article to be found by someone in a Google search one day,” Frates wrote in his HuffPost blog, “much like the one that linked my symptoms to ALS — and for he or she to wonder how anyone ever could have died from something treated so easily,”” says Huffington Post.

So far, The ALS Association has received over $100 million compared to $3 million around this time last year.

“The group now faces a challenge: how should it spend all that money. They have already begun consulting with clients, volunteers and its 38 chapters across the country on how the money should be spent,” according to Good News Network.

If you want to help make a difference in all the people who have been diagnosed with this terrible and heartbreaking disease and their family and friends, you can donate here: http://www.alsa.org/

It doesn’t matter whether you give a few cents, or $100, every penny counts.

“Let’s make this disease a thing of the past,” Pete Frates.
